The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) in New York City has decided to defer $16.5 billion in capital improvements to upgrade the city's transit system, including extending the Second Avenue subway to Harlem. This decision was made after Governor Kathy Hochul paused a congestion pricing plan that would have funded such projects, leading to a $15 billion gap in the agency's spending plan. The MTA will now focus on state-of-good-repair work, cutting back on modernization projects and affecting plans to enhance subway stations, replace signals, purchase new vehicles, and more.
