Crime on New York City's subway system has decreased by 11% compared to 2019, attributed to Mayor Eric Adams increasing the number of uniformed police officers. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority aims to enhance confidence in the system to boost ridership, with safety and reduced erratic behavior being top priorities for passengers. Despite the improvements, challenges remain as subway ridership is only at 70% of pre-pandemic levels, and the transit system relies on increasing ridership to 80% by 2026 for revenue. The MTA plans to have cameras in most or all train cars by year-end as a deterrent against crime, although violent incidents like murders continue to pose a challenge.
