The annual Muslim pilgrimage in Mecca had around 1.8 million participants, with temperatures exceeding 50 degrees, leading to over 1,000 deaths due to the scorching heat. Many pilgrims without pilgrimage permits faced risks of heatstroke and fainting as they were unable to use official air-conditioned facilities. Despite efforts like sprinklers and water coolers, the extreme heat proved fatal for many amid the large gathering in the city.
