Due to Taiwan's severe declining birth rates, over 1000 elementary schools across the country are at risk of closure as they have less than 100 students, with 490 schools having less than 50 students. This decline has led to schools merging or closing down, such as Pingtung Lingyun Elementary School, Qiao Zhi Elementary School, and Jiuliao Elementary School, which are confirmed to close in August this year. The closures could result in hundreds of teachers losing their jobs, with the Education Ministry suggesting alternatives like mixed-age classes or privatization to address the issue.
