Over 50 Deaths in Southern India Due to Consumption of Counterfeit Alcohol

Reported 8 months ago

A large-scale counterfeit alcohol incident recently occurred in Tamil Nadu, southern India, where nearly 200 individuals have sought medical treatment after consuming adulterated alcohol with methanol, resulting in 54 deaths and over a hundred people still hospitalized. Indigent locals turned to illicit alcohol manufacturers due to their inability to afford legitimate alcohol, leading to the addition of methanol to homemade alcohol to enhance intoxication effects. Methanol, a highly toxic industrial chemical, can cause blindness, liver damage, or even death with minimal ingestion. In response to this incident, Tamil Nadu government has arrested 7 counterfeit alcohol producers, seized 200 liters of illegal alcohol, and disciplined 10 alcohol regulation officials. Chief Minister Stalin has ordered a thorough investigation and promised government compensation for affected families and hospitalized individuals.
