On July 9th, 2024, the Japanese government issued heatstroke warnings in Tokyo and other prefectures due to the rising number of heat-related illnesses, with a total of 9,105 people hospitalized nationwide from July 1st to 7th, which is four times more than the previous week and over doubled from the same period last year. In Tokyo alone, 6 suspected heatstroke deaths have been reported this month. The elderly above 65 years old account for 60% of these cases. Authorities urge people to use air conditioning even at night, stay hydrated, and take precautions against heatstroke during the current heatwave.
