The Philippines has banned the importation of birds and poultry products from Australia as a precaution against recent cases of bird flu in Australia. The ban follows outbreaks of H7N3 and H7N9 bird flu subtypes in Victoria, Australia, prompting Manila’s Department of Agriculture's decision. However, shipments of birds from Australia that were produced or slaughtered on or before May 9 will be allowed. The World Health Organization also reported Australia's first human infection by H5N1 avian influenza in a 2 1/2-year-old child, who likely contracted the virus during a trip to India. This ban affects the Philippines, whose imports from Australia include chicken meat, day-old chicks, and hatching eggs.
