The government of Texas in the United States has announced encouraging building managers and the public to turn off unnecessary lighting at night to reduce the risk of around 2 billion migrating birds passing through the state annually colliding with buildings and dying due to the attraction of bright lights. The National Audubon Society is actively working with several states and cities in the US and Canada, including Texas, to promote the Lights Out movement, urging developers, businesses, building owners, and individuals to turn off outdoor lighting at night to assist birds in their migration and prevent such tragic incidents.
