Protecting Pedestrians! YouBike Electric Assist Bikes in Taipei City to Be Speed Limited

Reported about 1 year ago

Taipei City's YouBike electric assist bikes are set to hit the streets in November with a top speed of 25 km/h, raising concerns about pedestrian safety on sidewalks. In response, Taipei City's Transportation Bureau Director, Xie Minghong, is planning to limit the power supply once speeds exceed 20 km/h and assess sidewalk spaces for potential 'diversion lanes.' While these electric bikes still require pedaling, the electric assistance allows for speeds up to 25 km/h, prompting discussions in Taipei and New Taipei City to lower the power supply threshold to ensure pedestrian safety and designate clear bike and pedestrian lanes on wider sidewalks.
