Quarterly Foreign Tourists' Expenditure in Japan Reaches ¥1.75 Trillion

Due to factors like the depreciation of the yen, foreign tourists' spending in Japan has been very active. According to a survey by the Japan Tourism Agency, the estimated expenditure for the first quarter (January to March) reached 1.5 times that of pre-pandemic levels. The report shows that in the first quarter of 2024, travel expenditure by foreign tourists compared to the same period last year increased by 73.3% to ¥1.7505 trillion yen. Mainland Chinese tourists had the highest spending at 20.1%, followed by Taiwan (14.4%), South Korea (13.6%), the U.S. (9.8%), Hong Kong (8.8%), and Australia (5.4%). Accommodation expenses were the highest at 32.1%, followed by shopping (29.2%) and dining (21.7%).
