On June 14, 2024, unprecedented heavy rain hit areas like Tomigusuku City in Okinawa, with up to 110 mm of rainfall per hour. Due to the unstable atmospheric conditions, Okinawa Island was expected to receive around 110 mm of intense rainfall. The Japan Meteorological Agency issued warnings for landslides, flooding in low-lying areas, and increased river levels. In addition to heavy rain, lightning strikes at Naha Airport caused several flights from airlines like Japan Airlines, All Nippon Airways, and Amakusa Airlines to be delayed, with ground staff taking shelter from the lightning strikes. The region continues to face the risk of landslides due to the significant rainfall amounts.
