Recent decades in Taiwan have seen frequent outbreaks of enterovirus, especially concerning for parents of young children. Researchers discovered that high blood sugar levels in hosts can lead to brainstem inflammation during enterovirus infection, and regulating blood sugar levels with insulin not only improves the survival rate of infected animals but also reduces virus-induced brain damage. The study has been published in the well-known academic journal 'Theranostics' and suggests a potential new treatment strategy using miR-206 for future enterovirus infections.
