The US auto-safety regulator has expanded its investigation into Waymo, Alphabet Inc.'s autonomous-vehicle subsidiary, following more incidents where Waymo cars were involved in collisions or potentially violated traffic laws. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported nine additional incidents with similar patterns, including 17 Waymo vehicles crashing into objects and 5 instances of the automated-driving system appearing to break traffic rules. The agency expressed concerns about the unexpected driving behaviors of ADS-equipped vehicles increasing the risk of accidents, property damage, and injuries. This investigation is part of heightened scrutiny on driver-assistance systems and autonomous vehicles, with recent probes also launched into companies like Tesla, Ford, and Amazon.
