Religious Organizations Must Comply with Labor Standards Act When Employing Temple Workers

Reported about 1 year ago

A recent report revealed that a temple in Tainan was advertising for 'temple assistants' with a monthly salary of only 25,000 NTD and 2 days off per month, which was found to not comply with labor laws by the Tainan City Government's Department of Labor. The Ministry of the Interior has urged religious organizations to ensure that the employment conditions for temple assistants and other temple workers comply with labor standards, emphasizing the protection of workers' rights. According to the Ministry of the Interior, labor laws apply to workers employed by religious organizations, but not to volunteers. Guidelines have been issued to ensure that agreements between temples and workers, such as temple assistants or administrative staff, abide by labor standards.
