Retired Policeman Duped in Online Romance with 'UN Doctor', Accidentally Becomes Accomplice in Scam, Sentenced to Jail

Reported about 1 year ago

A retired policeman with the surname C from Nantou County was lured into an online romance by a woman pretending to be a UN doctor stationed in Yemen. She claimed her son had an accident in the US and asked C to provide his bank account so that 'relatives' could transfer money for medical expenses, which C then withdrew, converted to bitcoins worth over 400,000, and sent to her account. Despite claiming to be a victim himself, the court found C guilty of two money laundering charges and sentenced him to a total of six months in prison and a fine of 100,000 yuan. The judge pointed out that as a former police officer, C should have been able to see through the scam and could not prove he was deceived.
