Retired Woman Scammed 11 Times, Loses 10kg Gold Worth 30 Million NTD

Reported 8 months ago

A 65-year-old retired woman in New Taipei City, who used to work in a foreign bank, was scammed by a fraud group after joining a fake stock market group. The group made her operate a fake app, persuaded her to invest, and showed fake profits on the account. Over two months, they met in person 11 times, where she handed over 10kg of gold worth 30 million NTD. The police, with the help of an antique dealer, arrested the scammers by pretending to sell vases and luring the driver to show up. The 18-year-old scammer pretended to be clueless upon arrest. The victim, a retired bank employee, had invested 450,000 NTD initially and then handed over a significant amount of gold before realizing she was scammed. The fraud group's strategy of meeting victims changed from homes or convenience stores to metro or bus stations. Although the victim's losses couldn't be recovered, authorities remind people to be cautious and verify actual profits before trusting investment schemes.
