In response to extreme nationalism reminiscent of the Boxer Rebellion and similar movements, violent acts targeting foreigners have occurred in China, despite recent efforts to attract international visitors and present a progressive image. Over the span of two weeks, incidents involving attacks on four Americans and a Japanese mother and child have been reported. Most recently, a middle-aged Chinese man attacked a Japanese mother and child with a knife while they were waiting for a school bus in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province. Fortunately, the mother and child's injuries are not life-threatening, but a Chinese woman working on the school bus is in critical condition. The attacker has been detained for questioning, and the incidents have taken place in areas with a significant foreign population, including Japanese residents.
