The death caused by a lithium battery catching fire while charging in June 2024 has raised safety concerns. In the past four years, incidents linking fires in Taipei to lithium batteries have resulted in six deaths. In Changhua, there have been twenty-four cases of electric bicycle fires from 2021 to 2023, mainly due to the use of batteries of unknown origin or modified electronic control systems, increasing the risk of overcharging and short circuits. The increased use of lithium batteries poses a fire hazard due to their flammable electrolytes. Authorities have reported 134 cases of lithium battery fires in Taipei from 2018 to 2023, mostly in building fires, followed by electric vehicle fires. As electric bicycles have become popular, there is a trend of modifying them for increased speed, posing a higher risk of vehicle failure and accidental fires.
