A Taroko Express train collided with falling rocks in the Hualien region on June 21, 2024, causing the driver to suffer a fracture and injuring six passengers. The incident plunged the carriages into darkness inside the tunnel, but around 500 passengers were safely evacuated with the help of mobile phone lights for illumination. Emergency responders arrived at the scene where the driver's cabin was damaged due to the impact of the rocks, with the locomotive derailing. Passengers, although startled, cooperated with the evacuation process, facing challenges due to the dark tunnel and expressing concerns about further rockfalls, making their journey home both dangerous and challenging.
