According to SpaceNews on June 27, 2024, a Russian satellite disintegrated in low Earth orbit on June 26, resulting in over 100 trackable fragments and causing the crew members of the International Space Station to temporarily evacuate. The satellite, identified as the retired Russian satellite RESURS-P1 (#39186), disintegrated for unknown reasons, releasing more than 100 trackable debris pieces. LeoLabs, a space debris tracking company, reported detecting at least 180 objects generated from the event, with the cause of the disintegration still under investigation.
