San Diego Padres infielder Tucupita Marcano has been permanently banned from Major League Baseball for betting over $150,000 on baseball, including MLB games. The 24-year-old player is the first active player to receive a lifetime ban for gambling since 1924. MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred emphasized the importance of upholding the integrity of the sport, with Marcano being found guilty of placing 387 baseball bets, including ones related to Pittsburgh Pirates games while he was on the team. Marcano has not played in any games he bet on due to injury, losing most of his wagers. The league also suspended Oakland Athletics pitcher Michael Kelly and three minor leaguers for betting on baseball games.
