Scam Gangs Exploit AI Trend, Housewives Defrauded Millions in Investments

Reported about 1 year ago

A scam group took advantage of the AI trend by impersonating the chairman of a technology company and running ads on Facebook, targeting three housewives who believed in the future prospects of the AI industry. Following the scammers' instructions, the victims ended up meeting face-to-face and transferring over 20 million NT dollars, only to realize they couldn't withdraw profits. Police intercepted the fraud group, who used a car motel as a base, to target victims related to a tech company producing tablets and displays. The victims were guided into fake investment apps and collectively lost around 26 million NT dollars. Financial expert Xie Jinhe was also used in similar scams. Victims recounted being lured into increasing payments and realizing the scheme was fraudulent, cautioning the public against falling prey to similar tactics.
