SEMI: Global Semiconductor Wafer Capacity Climbs for 2nd Consecutive Year! China's Chip Capacity Sees Double-Digit Growth

Reported 8 months ago

SEMI released a new quarterly forecast on semiconductor wafer fabs, predicting a 6% and 7% growth in global wafer capacity for the next two years. The demand for chips drives continuous growth in semiconductor wafer production, with an expected 6% and 7% increase in capacity in 2024 and 2025, reaching a record high. China's chip manufacturers are expected to maintain double-digit capacity growth, leading globally. Advanced processes below 5nm are projected to grow by 13% in 2024, propelled by AI technologies. Major chip manufacturers like Intel, Samsung, and TSMC are preparing to produce 2nm Gate-All-Around (GAA) chips, leading to a 17% increase in total capacity in 2025. Despite potential risks from overexpansion, China is actively investing in capacity expansion to alleviate export controls' impact and enhance semiconductor production capabilities. Apart from China, other major chip manufacturing regions are forecasted to have capacity growth of no more than 5% by 2025.
