During a session at the Legislative Yuan, Gu Li Xiong, the Minister of National Defense, reported on the planning of the Han Kuang Exercise and answered questions. When asked by KMT lawmaker Hsu Chiao-hsin who the Taiwanese military was fighting for, Gu replied 'for the Republic of China.' Hsu then pointedly asked whether President Lai Ching-te's statement that the Republic of China was also about Taiwan independence meant that the military was fighting for independence, to which Gu explained that defending the ROC's sovereignty was seen as a form of Taiwan independence by China. Hsu's subsequent retort, insisting that the military should fight for the ROC and dismiss China's views, led to an awkward moment where Gu couldn't help but laugh. Hsu also emphasized that the military serves the people and the ROC, fiercely rejecting China's influence over Taiwan's affairs.
