Marie Bastien, who was 14 when a U.S. pilot's plane was shot down near her village in France, has dedicated herself to keeping his memory alive. Bastien, now 94, worked with her daughter and others to honor 1st Lt. Paul Chaufty, who died in 1944 after his plane was hit by enemy fire. Through their efforts, a plaque was unveiled in his honor in Saint-Ellier-les-Bois, where he was found after his death. Chaufty's great niece, Nicole Saunders, 53, expressed gratitude for Bastien's dedication in preserving his memory, as the family had little information about him prior. The emotional ceremony brought together family members and locals to honor the fallen pilot's bravery and sacrifice.
