Yen had been estranged from his family for 16 years before joining a church to help the vulnerable like himself. Despite his blindness, he remained cheerful and discussed politics with his son, who had yearly visits with him. Yen, who had been living independently, was known for his kindness and assistance to his roommates in need, showing that despite his own struggles, he dedicated himself to helping others.
