Sony Disc Department to Cut 250 Employees and Gradually Cease Blu-ray Disc Production

Reported 12 months ago

According to a report from Japan's Mainichi Shimbun, due to the rapid development of digital media worldwide and a significant decrease in demand for disc media, Sony's disc manufacturing plant in Saga, Miyagi Prefecture, will cut 250 employees and even introduce early retirement plans, resulting in a reduction of nearly 40% of its workforce. The affected area will mainly be in disc burning, with Blu-ray disc production set to be phased out, potentially impacting the gaming business soon. Sony, a creator of Blu-ray disc technology in 2000, may outsource its physical media business in the future, as digital media is expected to dominate the market completely.
