Sore Throat Cases Surge with Doctor Warning Increased Infectivity of Variant Strains: Outbreak Season Arrives a Month Earlier Than Last Year

Reported 11 months ago

As the sixth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic sweeps through, Dr. Huang Gaobin emphasized the current period as the 'summer of COVID-19,' with a notable increase in patients presenting with respiratory discomfort in emergency and outpatient departments. Approximately 30-40% of such cases are confirmed to be COVID-19, largely due to the increased transmissibility of variant strains and inadequate mask-wearing compliance. Dr. Huang also highlighted factors such as returning students from abroad and indoor congregations due to heavy rain contributing to the rapid spread of the virus. The majority of recent patients have sought medical attention for 'sore throat,' with some experiencing low-grade fevers but mostly exhibiting mild symptoms. The prevalence of variant strain KP.3 surpassing KP.2 and expected to rise further was also underlined, urging caregivers to ensure proper hygiene practices, especially for young children, amidst the early onset of this year's outbreak season compared to previous years.
