On July 2, 2024, the South Korean Defense Ministry announced that the South Korean military conducted live-fire artillery drills in the Gyeonggi and Gangwon provinces, marking the first time in 6 years since the signing of the 2018 inter-Korean Comprehensive Military Agreement that such drills were held near the inter-Korean Military Demarcation Line (MDL) to deter recent provocations by North Korea. Despite restrictions in the agreement, South Korea restarted artillery drills in response to North Korea's missile tests and provocations, emphasizing the need to enhance combat readiness and send a clear deterrent message.
