On June 12, 2024, at 8:26 AM local time, a magnitude 4.8 extremely shallow depth earthquake hit North Jeolla Province in South Korea, with a depth of only 8 kilometers and no nearby fault lines. This was the strongest earthquake on the Korean Peninsula and surrounding waters this year, felt across the country with residents in Gangwon, Seoul, and Gyeongsang provinces experiencing significant shaking. The South Korean Meteorological Agency sent out emergency disaster alerts, and although no fault lines were observed near the epicenter, seismic activity was likely due to abrupt crustal movement causing ground shaking.
