South Korean Youth Turn to Shamanism for Spiritual Guidance Amid High Housing Prices

Reported 11 months ago

The South Korean film 'The Tomb' has been successful in Taiwan, portraying a shaman witch played by Kim Go-eun, reflecting the popular local belief in shamanism where many young people have turned to for guidance amidst economic difficulties. Despite lacking government regulation, traditional shaman practices remain popular in South Korea. Shamanism, a blend of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism, involves rituals to invite spirits to bless or predict fortunes. Recently perceived as a way to find peace and clarity, shamanism's popularity has grown, attracting more young practitioners. However, the lack of regulation has led to instances of fraud and undisclosed fees among the estimated 400,000 shamans in the country.
