The Southern Baptist Convention voted to expel First Baptist Church of Alexandria in Virginia for affirming women can serve as pastors, including in senior roles. The church's beliefs conflicted with the Baptist Faith and Message, which states only men are qualified for the role of pastor. Despite the expulsion, the Alexandria church expressed a desire to continue cooperation with Southern Baptists, emphasizing their commitment to advancing the gospel. Southern Baptist delegates are now considering adding a ban on churches with women pastors to the SBC's constitution, with a final vote pending this year.
