Spain's data protection watchdog, AEPD, has temporarily halted two upcoming Meta products, 'Election Day Information' (EDI) and 'Voter Information Unit' (VIU), intended for the European election on Instagram and Facebook, citing GDPR violations. Despite Meta's assertion that the tools respect privacy, AEPD found the data collection methods unnecessary and excessive, targeting non-EU citizens and storing data without justification. The agency emphasized the breach of GDPR's principles and highlighted the questionable data retention practices by Meta.
