Study Shows Clinic Closures and Confusion Leading to Decline in Contraception Use

Reported about 1 year ago

A study conducted by the University of California Los Angeles revealed that clinic closures and confusion surrounding emergency contraceptives have significantly decreased the rate of prescriptions for contraceptives in states with restrictive abortion bans following the Dobbs decision in June 2022. The uncertainty about the legality of emergency contraceptives, particularly Plan B, has led to a drop in prescription rates, with some states experiencing over a 70% decrease. The study also highlighted the impact on access to contraception in states with the most restrictive bans, where both emergency and oral contraceptive prescriptions have declined, possibly due to the closure of abortion clinics that provided these services.
