Super Typhoon Kong-Rey Prompts Stock Trading Suspension in Taiwan

Reported 28 days ago

Taiwan is set to suspend trading on its stock exchange due to the approaching Super Typhoon Kong-Rey, which has intensified with winds reaching 125 knots (232 km/h), making it equivalent to a Category 4 hurricane. The typhoon is expected to make landfall on Thursday afternoon, prompting the closure of offices and schools in Taipei. This marks the first time since 2015 that Taiwan's exchange has closed three times in a year because of typhoons. Authorities are concerned about potential flooding and landslides as Kong-Rey moves across the already saturated ground, with some mountainous regions possibly receiving up to 1,200 mm of rain.
