Reported about 1 year ago
On June 24, 2024, people near the Choku industrial park in Taichung reported seeing white smoke and smelling pungent plastic odors, fearing for their health. Legislator Yang Chiung-yung invited relevant units to the scene to urge companies to take social responsibility seriously in pollution prevention efforts. The Environmental Protection Bureau responded by installing 24-hour surveillance cameras at the request of several district chiefs, who also suggested providing reporting channels for timely detection and inspection of any abnormal situations. It was found that water vapor conditions caused a misty effect due to natural factors in the cooling water tower vents. Cases of suspected air pollution involving similar water vapor mist have been reported in the Choku, Wuci, and Dali industrial areas. The Environmental Protection Bureau plans to collaborate with Choku in the future using AI and IoT devices to detect volatile organic gases. Residents raised concerns about air pollution caused by factory emissions, waste disassembly, and burning at night, urging the authorities to uncover the culprits behind the pollution. Legislator Yang emphasized the importance of clean air for public health, proposing the implementation of AI intelligent image recognition systems to monitor major emission sources in Choku parks. City councilor Chiu Ai-shan welcomed new companies to set up factories in Choku for economic development but emphasized not at the expense of residents' health, supporting the installation of a 24-hour surveillance system.
