A couple in Tianmu, Taipei, surnamed Li, was accused of abusing their Indonesian maid for 14 months, including breaking her teeth and forcing her to consume excrement. The abuse was exposed when the maid escaped and sought help. After over a year of trial, the case was settled with a 1 million NTD payment, and the court ruled that the lawsuit would not be accepted. The maid withdrew the charges after reaching a settlement with the Li couple. The employer denied the allegations and even mentioned seeking assistance from the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT).
