Taiwan Mayor Involved in Land Development Scandal, Lawyer Claims Innocence

On July 6, 2024, former Taoyuan mayor and current chairman of the Straits Exchange Foundation, Cheng Wen-tsang, was summoned by the Taoyuan District Prosecutors Office due to his suspected involvement in a land development scandal. After overnight questioning, he was formally requested for detention by the Taoyuan District Court based on substantial suspicion of violating anti-corruption laws. Cheng's lawyer asserts his innocence, stating full cooperation with the judicial investigation to quickly clarify the truth and prove his innocence. Both blue and green camp legislators call for justice to reveal the truth, while Cheng Wen-tsang's detention hearing is scheduled with his lawyer already present at the court for preparations.
