Taiwan Mayor Zheng Wen-Can Arrested for 7 Years of Bribery Upon Returning to Taiwan, Prosecutors Did Not Search Taoyuan City Hall Simultaneously Reveals Reasons

Reported about 1 year ago

Taiwan Mayor Zheng Wen-Can, also the chairman of the Straits Exchange Foundation, was suspected of bribery related to the 'Huaya Technology Park expansion urban planning project' and was arrested by prosecutors today for detention and no visitation. Prosecutors have been gradually accessing information from relevant departments such as the Urban Development Bureau and Economic Development Bureau of Taoyuan City Hall since last year, but did not search the city hall simultaneously. The case involves land acquisition for the 'Change of Linkou Specific Zone Plan—Industrial Zone Expansion Plan', and despite approval by the Taoyuan City government, the Ministry of the Interior did not agree. Mayor Zheng was accused of promising to assist private companies in land conversion during his tenure, which led to bribery suspicions. Zheng admitted knowing four individuals involved in bribery during interrogation. If convicted, the penalties for the crimes are severe, with a fine of up to NT$60 million. Investigation and legal proceedings are ongoing.
