Taiwan Premier: Support for Small Fishing Boats to be Equipped With Automatic Identification System after Chinese Speedboat Incident in Tamsui River

During Premier Su Tseng-chang's inquiry session on June 14, 2024, he and Chairperson of the Ocean Affairs Council Kuan Pi-ling addressed the issue of a recent incident where a Chinese national drove a speedboat into the Tamsui River and expressed intent to surrender. Premier Su promised to seek ways to equip boats under 20 tons with Automatic Identification Systems (AIS) for quicker identification at sea. This initiative is aimed at preventing similar occurrences and enhancing maritime security. Various government officials, including Minister Chen Chi-chin, expressed support for the installation of AIS on small fishing vessels to improve identification capabilities from a national security perspective.
