Reported about 1 year ago
On June 21, 2024, at 7:41 AM, according to CTi News, Taiwan Rail Train 229 New Taroko Express was struck by falling rocks inside the Qingshui Tunnel at 4:50 PM on the same day, resulting in the train stopping, the train driver fracturing a hand, and 6 passengers sustaining minor injuries. Due to recent intense convection in the afternoon causing softening of mountainous soil, a mudslide occurred at the southern entrance of the Qingshui Tunnel. The train driver saw it too late to brake, necessitating emergency repair by the TRA's Hualien Engineering Unit to scenes of damaged driving and first cars, a skewed door, and a derailed second car. The TRA did not conduct a transport safety investigation immediately due to the natural disaster, prioritizing emergency rescue operations, dispatching repair and engineering units to Yilan and Hualien, and implementing reduced-speed single-track operations below 20 km/h with horn signaling. Passengers reported impacts from rocks in the first and second cars leading to loud noises and the need for medical personnel to assist, assess injuries, and guide passengers to disembark and transfer to TRA shuttle services.
