Taiwan Railway clears 'Hualien to Heren Section' in accident, train valued at 800 million dragged out of tunnel overnight

Reported about 1 year ago

Taiwan Railway's No. 229 New Tze-chiang Express train derailed in Hualien's Qingshui Tunnel after hitting falling rocks, resulting in injuries to the driver and 8 passengers. The accident led to the train being pulled out of the tunnel the next morning, however, due to the high value of the train, repairs are expected to take some time. The line between Heren and Chongde has also resumed operation. The incident occurred when the train collided with debris from a mudslide, causing sections of the train to derail. After urgent repairs, the line has reopened with trains passing through the area at reduced speeds. Each car of the train is priced at 70 million NTD, and importing equipment from Japan for repairs will take time. Passengers of the train are eligible for full refunds due to the delay of over 2 hours upon arrival at their destination.
