In the morning of June 21, 2024, a Taiwan Railway Puyuma Express train derailed in the Hualien Chongde-He Ren section after hitting falling rocks, causing passengers to evacuate in darkness. The train was stuck in the tunnel, and passengers had to walk and take connecting buses. The driver suffered a fracture, and 8 passengers were injured, with the railway company's emergency response team activated. The incident took place in the westbound lane between Chongde and He Ren around 16:50, with the driver and 8 passengers sustaining injuries. The train was halted inside the tunnel until passengers were evacuated and transferred to another train for transportation. The railway company has set up emergency response teams and is working to resolve the situation.
