Since its official establishment on New Year’s Day in 2024, Taiwan Railways Corporation (台鐵) faced a lower number of applicants than expected, recruiting only 756 out of the planned 936 employees. Among the new hires, a 65-year-old employee who is close to retirement soon after being hired sparked discussions. The company responded by citing anti-discrimination laws, emphasizing the employee's qualifications rather than age. The employee has been assigned to maintenance duties in Hualien, with a probation period of three months before considering a change due to imminent retirement. In response to labor shortages, the corporation announced plans for additional recruitment in the second half of the year and increased bonus incentives for employees, aiming to improve the working environment and morale.
