On June 21, 2024, at 4:50 pm, Taiwan Railways' new Taroko Express Train No. 229 derailed after hitting rocks in the Shanbaohehjen Section of the Xi Zheng Line in the Qingshui Tunnel, resulting in the train driver's hand fracture and injuries to 8 passengers. Premier Su Tseng-chang visited Hualien the next day to inspect earthquake reconstruction progress and expressed his apologies for the incident. He emphasized the need for Taiwan Railways to thoroughly inspect their warning systems and vowed to personally ride the train next month to ensure safety, stating 'We are truly in this together.' Su also allocated funds for infrastructure repairs and emphasized the government's responsibility towards safety and recovery efforts post-accident, acknowledging the need for improved efforts and efficiency.
