Taiwan's representative in the U.S., Yu Da-Liang, has been accused of using public funds to purchase luxury items, including a nearly 4 million Cadillac, expensive sofas, and coffee machines. His wife, who is not a public servant, reportedly demanded embassy staff to accompany her for personal shopping during non-official hours. Following the scandal, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs requested Yu Da-Liang to clarify the procurement items and stated that the purchase of luxury items and the treatment of staff would be investigated. President Lai Ching-te has instructed relevant government agencies to handle the matter according to regulations.
