Taiwan-US Collaboration Discovers Segmental Recombination in H3N2 Virus Genes

Reported 7 months ago

A collaboration between Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Chang Gung University, and Johns Hopkins University discovered a significant finding in influenza virus research after ten years of effort. They found through whole-genome sequencing and artificial intelligence that H3N2 influenza virus exhibits genetic segment recombination, suggesting strong replicative ability and virulence that could lead to severe complications in patients. This study, published in May 2024 in the top international journal 'Lancet-microbe,' provides evidence of the potential link between influenza virus genetic recombination and human diseases, impacting future vaccine development and public health strategies on epidemics.
