A couple and their son surnamed Xiao in Taoyuan City were convicted of purchasing cracked, moldy, and infested eggs at low prices from chicken farmers and packaging them as liquid egg products like egg white, egg yolk, and whole eggs for sale, making illegal profits of nearly 58 million NTD over 5 years before being caught in 2018. They were sentenced to 2 to 2.4 years in prison for fraud and confiscation of illegal gains, with the possibility to appeal. Investigations revealed that they had been mixing expired eggs and substandard eggs to reduce costs since 2016, deceiving unaware consumers and businesses, including bakeries. Authorities seized evidence in searches across multiple locations and detained 17 individuals involved in the case.
