Taiwanese Fishing Boat Taken by Chinese Coast Guard Amid Standoff with Three Taiwanese Patrol Vessels

Reported 12 months ago

On July 2, 2024, a Taiwanese fishing boat 'Da Jin Man 88' was forcibly detained by two Chinese coast guard vessels while fishing off the coast of Kinmen Island. Three Taiwanese patrol vessels were dispatched to confront the Chinese coast guard vessels, but with a total of seven Chinese vessels in the area, a confrontation was avoided to prevent escalation. The Taiwanese government is coordinating with Chinese authorities for the release of the fishing boat and its crew. The incident occurred in waters claimed by Taiwan but within the jurisdiction of China, during a period when Chinese waters were closed for fishing.
