Taiwanese Government's New Policies and Challenges

Reported 8 months ago

On the one-month anniversary of President Lai Ching-te's inauguration, he announced the establishment of three major committees focused on climate change, a healthy Taiwan, and national defense, aiming to take control of the political agenda. However, faced with internal and external challenges, the Lai administration's initial approach has caused political turmoil. Despite efforts to regain control of the narrative, controversies may overshadow the formation of these committees. The government's efforts to address long-standing issues have coincided with a decline in Lai's approval ratings, leading to the introduction of significant policy directions to deflect recent dissatisfaction. While the establishment of the committees is intended to seek solutions through collaboration, it begs the question of why such initiatives were not launched sooner, especially for a newly established government facing uncertainties both domestically and internationally. The future governance of the Lai administration appears to face deep-rooted issues that simple committee formations may not be able to resolve.
